Best Regional Centre Student Award - Sarawak

Deirdre Bunjai Bucking

School of Education and Humanities

Deirdre Bunjai Bucking’s journey began far from the spotlight, shaped by responsibility, resilience, and an unwavering determination to keep moving forward. A graduate of UNIRAZAK’s Bachelor of Education (Honours) in TESL from the Sarawak Regional Centre, she represents the strength of learners who rise beyond circumstance and geography.

Balancing her studies with leadership responsibilities, professional commitments, and motherhood, she carved her path with courage and purpose. Her recognition as the Best Regional Centre Student Award (Sarawak) recipient marks not only a personal achievement but also a meaningful milestone that reflects the spirit, perseverance, and potential of UNIRAZAK’s regional community.

How does it feel to receive this award, and what kept you going through your journey at UNIRAZAK?

Receiving this award filled me with immense pride, joy, and relief. Knowing that it was the first time this award was presented to a regional centre student like me made the moment even more meaningful. It felt like a powerful affirmation that our efforts, regardless of location, truly matter.

What kept me motivated throughout my journey was my family — especially my son, Michael, and my parents. Their unwavering support gave me strength during challenging moments and reminded me why I kept pushing forward. This award belongs not only to me, but to everyone who stood by me and believed that we were giving our very best.

“Purpose lights the path, and support gives the
strength to walk it — no matter how far it leads.”

What challenges did you face, and how did you manage to “Break Through”?

One of my biggest challenges came when I stepped into the role of Acting President of the Student Representative Council in 2024. The responsibility was sudden and demanding — I had to lead the council, act as a bridge between students and the college, manage my studies, and fulfil my role as a mother all at the same time.

I managed to break through by learning to prioritise tasks, delegate responsibilities, and lean on my support system. With encouragement from my family, friends, and council members, the pressure became a defining leadership experience. It strengthened my confidence, sharpened my skills, and reminded me that challenges often carry the seeds of growth.

What memories or lessons will you carry forward, and what advice would you give to future Razakians?

One of my most treasured memories is the strong sense of community at SIDMA College, UNIRAZAK Sarawak Regional Centre. Despite being a small regional centre, the energy, celebrations, and student programmes were vibrant and meaningful. That close-knit environment gave me a sense of belonging that made all the difference at this stage of my life.

I’m deeply grateful to lecturers like Sir John and Sir Faizul, whose guidance prepared me for real-world challenges, and to friends such as Irdeana binti Asrol, who supported me during practicum, group work, and student leadership.

To future Razakians, my advice is simple: find your support system and hold on to it. No one thrives alone. Find your purpose, push yourself toward it, and embrace every moment of the journey. The pride you gain from achieving your goals can never be taken away.
