Muhammad Syafiq, a proud native of Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, began his educational journey at SMK Aminuddin Baki. His path took a transformative turn when he was awarded the prestigious BUDI PNB-UNIRAZAK scholarship, enabling him to pursue foundation studies at UNIRAZAK. Building on this opportunity, he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and obtained CPA Australia certification.
Syafiq’s professional career began at Ernst & Young, one of the Big Four global accounting firms, where he excelled as an Auditor. He played a crucial role in managing audits for subsidiaries of major listed oil and gas companies, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial statements. This experience honed his technical expertise, enhanced his ability to navigate complex business environments, and established him as a respected professional in the field.
Receiving the Vice-Chancellor Award was an indescribably surreal moment for me. Initially, I was in complete disbelief–it felt almost unreal to be honoured with such prestigious recognition. Yet, it brings me immense joy and pride, not just for myself but also for the support and encouragement I’ve received from my family and friends throughout my journey.
The drive to excel academically began when I was awarded the BUDI PNB-UNIRAZAK scholarship. I understood the immense privilege of this opportunity and its potential to shape my knowledge, career, and personal growth. But what indeed kept me going was the deep desire to make my parents proud. Their sacrifices and struggles in raising me have always been my greatest motivation. Receiving this award feels like a meaningful step toward honouring their dedication and repaying them for all they’ve done for me.
“Success isn’t just about personal
achievement–it’s about honouring
the sacrifices of those who believed
in you and using your journey
to inspire others.”
My biggest challenges during my studies were balancing academics, extracurricular activities, and personal commitments. At times, it felt overwhelming, and I wondered if my efforts would yield meaningful results. However, I overcome this by shifting my mindset. I reminded myself that my success wasn’t just for me–it was for my family and friends, whose happiness and support inspired me to keep going.
To manage my commitments, I adopted a structured routine, dedicating specific hours of coursework, my roles in the Student Representative Council, club activities, non-profit events, and my passion for fitness and sports. This disciplined approach kept me organised and focused, allowing m e to excel academically while pursuing the activities I loved. Ultimately, I realised my dreams weren’t just for me–they were for everyone who believed in me.
My time at UNIRAZAK was defined by its modern and flexible approach to learning, which emphasised open dialogue and meaningful discussion between lecturers and students. This interactive environment made learning more engaging, bridging the gap between theoretical concepts and real-world applications. Focusing on practical knowledge enriched my education, making it feel relevant and connected to the dynamic world outside the classroom.
The lecturers at UNIRAZAK had a profound impact on my academic journey. Prof. Zul, my mentor, inspired me to aim high, especially during my CPA Australia preparations. Asst. Prof. Chong K. Rine a strong foundation by introducing me to the technical side of accounting, while Mr. Jay equipped me with the knowledge to pass professional papers. Their guidance, along with the effort of the entire faculty, not only enhanced my academic and professional skills but also helped me grow as an individual, for which I am deeply grateful.
Looking ahead, my immediate goal is to complete the three-year professional requirement to become a certified accountant, focusing on excelling in my role as an auditor. The solid theoretical foundation I gained at UNIRAZAK has prepared me to deepen my industry expertise through hands-on experience, allowing me to see how businesses apply these concepts in real-world scenarios. By exploring different industries, I aim to discover the one that best aligns with my skills, interests, and long-term aspirations.
The academic and co-curricular experiences at UNIRAZAK have equipped me with technical knowledge and helped me cultivate essential soft skills such as adaptability and critical thinking. These experiences have given me the confidence and flexibility to navigate my career path. Ultimately, I aim to use the knowledge and insights I gain to contribute meaningfully to my community and society, inspiring others to pursue their own growth and success.
I advise all Razakians striving for academic excellence to see university as more than exams and assignments–a journey of growth and self-discovery. As Albert Einstein said, “Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.” The most valuable lessons often come from challenges, people, and experiences beyond the classroom.
Explore activities that interest you and contribute to your growth, even if unrelated to your studies, and persevere through complex tasks–they’re often stepping stones to success. Embrace every experience as a step toward shaping the person you’re meant to be.
